Orthodontics for Children, Teens, and Adults

Orthodontic braces are a common corrective measure for children whose teeth are not developing symmetrically – a condition known as malocclusion. With the help of carefully placed brackets and wires, orthodontics can realign crooked smiles to help children avoid problems that can arise from crooked teeth. However, adults can also exhibit malocclusion, and the effects can be devastating if not addressed. Fortunately, Dr. Schmidt offers a variety of orthodontic options, including cosmetic braces for teens and adults who wish to avoid conventional metal braces.

Traditional Braces

For children and patients who exhibit extensive malocclusion, traditional orthodontic braces are usually the most comprehensive corrective choice. Braces consist of small brackets that are semi-permanently bonded to teeth, then connected with maneuverable arch wire. The wire allows Dr. Schmidt to tighten and adjust the braces as needed during regular maintenance visits. For most patients, orthodontic braces must be worn up to two years or more, depending on the severity of the condition.

Invisalign®

The Invisalign® system consists of a series of clear, custom-made acrylic aligners designed to fit snugly over your teeth. Your aligners are designed to gradually nudge crooked teeth back into proper alignment by guiding them through a prescribed path of movement. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks, then changed for the next to continue your treatment. Because the aligners are clear, they are virtually invisible, and because they are removable, you won’t have to change your diet or take special measures to brush and floss your teeth.

ClearCorrect™

ClearCorrect™ is similar to Invisalign, consisting of invisible, removable acrylic aligners. Like Invisalign, ClearCorrect is designed for older teens and adults whose teeth have already fully developed, and who do not require more intensive correction through traditional braces. If you have trouble deciding between the two cosmetic braces systems, then Dr. Schmidt will consult with you to determine which system you should choose.
