Easier, More Comfortable Care with Sedation Dentistry

Dental sedation is not only for complicated procedures, like dental implant placement. When patients fear visiting the dentist, or experience a medical condition that makes treatment difficult, an appropriate level of sedation can help them relax enough to receive the dental care they need. During your consultation, Dr. Schmidt will discuss your concerns and the treatment you require, and what type and level of sedation is most appropriate.

Dental Sedation That We Offer

Nitrous Oxide (NO2)

Nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative that creates a calm, relaxed feeling. Commonly known as laughing gas for its euphoric effects, nitrous oxide is exhaled immediately after being inhaled, so it doesn’t linger, and its effects fade quickly after your procedure. It is also the mildest form of sedation, and can be safely administered to children.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is taken as a pill or liquid, and is stronger than nitrous oxide (how much so depends on the exact dosage). For increased comfort, you may be instructed to take it the night before your appointment as well as shortly before the procedure.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV sedation is delivered intravenously, and requires close monitoring (and possibly adjustment) throughout your procedure. Before recommending it, Dr. Schmidt will carefully review the benefits and risks, and whether or not a combination of nitrous oxide and oral sedation would be preferable.
